Gargas means “Mount” in Provençal. The village of Gargas has 3,000 inhabitants. In the midst of plains, it is located at 4 km from the southern end of the wooded plateau of the Vaucluse Mountains. Gargas is nested at an altitude of 280 meters and is situated at 50 km East from Avignon and 4 km from the town of Apt. The village is overlooked by three mounts and comprises many hamlets. The hill of Perreal, which peaks at 471 meters, constitutes a historical and geological site—classified and protected by UNESCO. It is a protected area within which “one must respect” rare plants. It is a prehistoric site and has remains of the Gallo-roman period. On top of the Perreal hill, we can visit ruins of a Gaulish oppidum occupied until the 1st century AD as well as the Roman Chapel of Sainte Radegonde, built in 1551. |
